The license plate is the official identification of the vehicle. But LICENSE PLATE often turns into something else: A Mobile Advertising Space!
❌ In fact, the hypothetical tax-based financial size of the “License Plate” is hundreds of Million TL!
Your vehicle is the advertising space of dealers, services, fleets, auto dealerships, insurance agencies…
So who owns this area?
1️⃣ What is the Legal Situation?
⦿ Content: According to the Regulation on Advertising in Commercial Vehicles , advertising should not cover the license plate and the light equipment of the vehicle!
⦿ Tax Dimension: The subject is included in the content of the Announcement and Advertisement Tax within the scope of the Municipal Revenues Law No. 2464 .
📌However, the small license plate inscriptions on private vehicles are often not like an open vehicle advertisement in practice, but a small marketing area that the legislation silently tolerates.
2️⃣ What Does the Vehicle Owner Think?
The name of a dealer or service has been representing in the back of the vehicle for years. The vehicle owner often does not see this as advertising.
3️⃣ Ownership?
- Contrary to popular belief, this issue is an additional labor and part cost item for those who install plate (distributors, dealers, fleet service, galleries, etc.).
- In addition, regular change is made in the competitive environment.
4️⃣ Hypothetical Tax-Induced Financial Magnitude Let’s make a simple scenario:
- Let’s assume that there are approximately 5 million vehicles in Turkey that may be affected by the license plate advertisement instead of the entire commercial vehicle-like park.
- Let’s assume that each vehicle has an average of only 20 cm² of license plate advertising space.
- There is a tax of 40 TL/m²/year seen in the 2026 municipal tariffs .
- Considering the logic of square meter completion in the Municipal Revenues Law No. 2464, even a very small area can theoretically be accepted as 0.5 m².
✅In this case, the potential size increases to approximately 100 million TL/year (5 million vehicles X 20 TL = 100 million TL).
Of course, this does not directly mean “collectible tax today”. But it shows why the license plate holder is not just a plastic frame, but a serious area of economic visibility.
⚠️Analysis of the Agency:
Possible applications in license plates:
- In private vehicles: try to completely cancel this applicaiton and so no text or logo is allowed. Plates caould be mounted to directly on the vehicle (Gluing, not drilling, drilling may impair legibility)
- For commercial vehicles: Entering the system during the registration of the license plate in the license plate holder and entering it in the license is subject to tax. Making controls over the license in inspections.
License plate holder may be Turkey’s most common but least talked about micro advertising channel.
